Peebles Island
Where the Hudson and Mohawk meet
Peebles Island is located at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. Formerly the site of a Cluett, Peabody & Co. chlorination plant (where they bleached cotton for shirts). The site was purchased by the State of N.Y. shortly after the plant closed in 1972. The park includes walking trails, picnic facilities and a visitor center.
This QTVR opens looking North, toward Waterford, NY, to the right is the Hudson River, and across it, Lansingburgh, NY. In the vicinity of the (rusted) bridge to the left, was the original river crossing, a water ford, from which the town of Waterford is named.
Peebles Island State Park is entered from Van Schaick Island.
