Boot Screens

the good

The familiar Happy Mac was replaced by

but, you may see other screens.

the bad

If the BootX program is properly loaded, but is unable to find components it requires to continue to the next stage of booting, then it will display

I've only seen this by mistakenly trying to boot from a half-deleted installation - if you encounter this you may have a seriously damaged file system on the boot drive. It may be repairable, but you'll need to boot off of another working drive, an OS X system CD, or a disk repair tools CD, and run the repair tools from the other drive.

the ugly

If the BootX program itself is corrupted then what used to be one of the above may just be garbage, like this or some other nonsensical pattern

It may be possible to boot from the same or an alternate partition if you reset or power cycle and hold down the option-key, then choose which boot disk you want after the system looks around all the local disks to discover which are bootable. This can take a number of minutes. If you are able to boot from the same partition via the option-key method, then you will probably want to run Permissions Repair, and to then go into the System Preferences Startup Disk and re-select the correct startup disk. If this does not work, extended disk diagnostics may be required. (I think this may occur if multiple BootX programs are present on the Startup disk - something normal people are not likely to run into, unless you muck about with customizing the boot-up screen.

custom screens

My customized startup screen for OS X Server displays Hexley, the Darwin mascot instead of the Apple Logo
