iPod: Stream your music.

Given That:

  • The iPod is a Firewire Disk Drive
  • You have installed OS X on it and can boot from it
  • You can install QuickTime Streaming Server on it

You can Stream the MP3s on from iPod !

Why?

  • So you can fire up iTunes and listen to music on the iPod while your fixing the bad computer?
  • Have iPod will party?
  • Stupid Mac Hack?

how to

1. Download QuickTime Streaming Server

(This example demonstrates QuickTime Streaming Server version 4)

2. Install it on the iPod (Uses approximately 12.5MB)

3. Configure QuickTimeStreamingServer to

  • start automatically
  • Create a playlist 'iPod' under the mount point '/iPod'
  • drag the sample.mp3 into the new playlist
  • turn on logging in the playlist
  • save the playlist settings

4. Check to see if the QTSS4 is working from your iPod, go to iTunes>Advanced>Open Stream (Cmd-U) and enter

rtsp://127.0.0.1:8000/iPod

this should connect to the stream you just created, if it plays, congrats! your QTSS4 server is running.

5. To add the iPods songs to a QTSS4 Playlist, go to QuickTime Streaming Admin server on the local machine, and select General Settings then modify the Media Directory to be /iPod_Control/Music/

Save these changes

6. Go to the Playlists page in the QuickTime Streaming Admin Server and some 20 folders will show up in the Available Media window. (The folders will be named F00, F01, F02, ... F19 they contain the songs on the iPod.)
